Lynn Davis

Galerie Karsten Greve Paris

April 13 - May 25, 2002
Opening: Saturday, April 13, 2002, 6 - 8:30 pm
The Galerie Karsten Greve is pleased to present, for the first time in France, an extensive exhibition of photographs by the American artist Lynn Davis, being since the 1970s an important figure in America's photography scene. The gallery presents in this show of about 40 works for one part her recent photographs taken of icebergs in Greenland; a second part of the exhibition focuses on her architectural landscapes, taken during extensive travelling in recent years in Egypt, Sudan, Mali and Turkey.
In her desire to record the monumentality of natural as well as architectural landscapes, the artist undertakes daunting expeditions. Her elegant but austere images are a glorification of the nature in itself (as in her images taken of icebergs) as well as the spiritual beliefs of ancient cultures (as in her images of pyramids or temples). Davis' elemental compositions purify her subjects into their simplest archetypal forms while at the same time transforming them into an enduring object of contemplation, so that the objects regain the beauty and dignity of their own.
Standing in the 19th century tradition of travel photography, Lynn Davis' photographs reach far beyond this concept of the "cultured traveller". The artist is not fascinated by exoticism as her predecessors; her investigations invite the beholder to undertake his own spiritual pilgrimage.
Davis' artistic concept is emphasised by the large format of the photographs as well as by the thorough production of the prints: they are toned with different materials like gold, sepia, or selenium, to underline the cool or warm atmosphere of the landscape, which develops at its best a nearly romantic seductiveness.
Lynn Davis' photographs have been exhibited internationally and collected widely. Her works appear in major collections such as the Museum of Modern Art New York, the L.A. County Museum in Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art or the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.
Born in 1944 in Minneapolis, Lynn Davis lives and works in New York.
