David Roland Smith naît le 9 mars 1906 à Decatur, dans l’Indiana, aux Etats Unis. Après ses études secondaires Smith étudie durant un an à l’Université de l’Ohio puis passe l’été de 1925 à travailler dans une usine automobile. En 1926, il déménage à New York, où il rejoint l’Art Students League. C’est alors qu’il commence à se familiariser avec l’œuvre de Pablo Picasso, Mondrian, Kandinsky, et des constructivistes russes. Les premières tentatives de soudure par Julio Gonzàlez et Pablo Picasso ont inspiré Smith et l’ont conduit à appliquer ses compétences techniques au domaine artistique. Ses constructions de 1933 sont certainement les premières sculptures soudées faites aux Etats-Unis. En tant que membre d’un cercle restreint de jeunes artistes avant-gardistes qui incluait Willem de Kooning, Arshile Gorky et Jackson Pollock,  Smith est à l’origine d’une œuvre qui dans les années trente l’a érigé au rang de seul sculpteur de la génération de l’Expressionnisme Abstrait. Smith a reçu le Guggenheim Fellowships en 1950 et 1951. Il a représenté les Etats-Unis à la Biennale International de Sao Paulo en 1951 ainsi qu’aux biennales de Venise de 1954 et 1958 Ses œuvres ont été incluses à l’exposition Douze peintres et sculpteurs américains contemporains organisée en 1953-1954 par le MOMA  de New York, présentée par la suite en France, Allemagne, Suisse, Finlande et Norvège, et en 1957, le MOMA lui consacra une rétrospective majeure. Certaines de ses œuvres furent aussi incluses à la documenta II: Skulptur de 1959 ainsi qu’à la documenta III de 1964, à  Kassel en Allemagne. 

Le numéro de février 1960 d’Arts Magazine a été consacré au travail de Smith. En 1961, le MOMA a organisé une exposition des sculptures de Smith qui voyagea à travers les Etats Unis pendant presque deux ans. En 1962, le Gouvernement italien invita Smith au festival des Deux Mondes de Spoleto. En lui donnant accès à une aciérie abandonnée et en lui fournissant un groupe d’assistants, il a produit un ensemble de 27 pièces en trente jours. En 1964, Smith a reçu un Creative Art Award de l’Université Brandeis et en février 1965, le Président Lyndon B. Johnson l’a nommé au Conseil des Arts. David Smith est mort dans un accident de voiture le 23 mai 1965 à l’âge de 59 ans. Depuis sa mort, des rétrospectives de David Smith se sont tenues dans de nombreux musées à travers le monde et plus récemment en 2006, au Guggenheim Museum de New York ainsi qu’au Centre Georges Pompidou à Paris.
