Joseph Cornell (1903-1972), artiste américain qui a vécu retiré dans l’État de New York, a durablement établi sa réputation de grande figure de l’art du XXe siècle grâce à ses assemblages sculpturaux et à ses films expérimentaux. C’est en autodidacte qu’il a créé des collages à partir de photographies et d’objets trouvés - choses éphémères et de tous les jours, qu’il collectionnait selon des critères personnels pour composer ensuite des assemblages dans des boîtes. L’artiste classait ces objets rassemblés par ses soins dans des dossiers documentaires consacrés à une infinité de sujets l’intéressant, dans lesquels il puisait ultérieurement des matériaux pour ses créations. Joseph Cornell a aussi été inspiré par des artistes contemporains, notamment Max Ernst et René Magritte, ce qui lui a maintes fois valu d’être associé au mouvement surréaliste.

L’artiste s’est quant à lui toujours gardé de faire entrer son travail dans une catégorie ou une autre. La carrière artistique de Joseph Cornell a véritablement décollé en 1949, à la suite de sa première exposition personnelle, à la Charles Eagan Gallery. Ses travaux ont été accueillis avec enthousiasme. Plus particulièrement, ses assemblages dans des boîtes sont devenus emblématiques de son œuvre et figurent à l’heure actuelle dans les collections de nombreuses institutions privées et publiques, parmi lesquelles le Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum de New York, le Centre Georges Pompidou, à Paris, et le Moderna Museet, à Stockholm. Joseph Cornell est décédé en 1972 à New York.
