Lucio Fontana (1899 – 1968) is one of the twentieth century’s most important avant-garde artists and today he still continues to inspire artists, designers and architects. He’s probably best known for his iconic monochrome paintings with vertical cuts. For Fontana, there was no fundamental distinction between visual art, architecture and design: he was a sculptor by trade and did not allow himself to be limited by disciplines in his conception of space. The jewellery and ceramics collection of the Design Museum in Den Bosch (the largest collection of work by Fontana in the Netherlands) forms the basis of the exhibition, supplemented by paintings, sculpture and light objects from the Netherlands and abroad. Fontana’s Ambienti spaziali can be seen in the Netherlands again for the first time since 1967. With approval of the Fondazione Lucio Fontana, these groundbreaking spaces and installations from the middle of the last century are being reconstructed in the museum. As a visitor, you literally step into Fontana’s space(s).
