So leidenschaftlich wie Ilse Bing hat wohl kaum je ein anderer Fotograf mit der Leica-Kamera gearbeitet. Seit 1929 gehörte sie zu ihrem ständigen Begleiter und sollte dieses über zwei Jahrzehnte hindurch bleiben: „Ich hatte das Gefühl, die Kamera sei zu einer Erweiterung meines Auges geworden“. Durch extreme Nahaufnahmen, gewagte Perspektiven, unkonventionelle Zuschnitte, Geometrien und Detailansichten isolierte die Künstlerin die Motive nicht nur aus ihrem ursprünglichen Kontext, sondern entfremdete sie geradezu. Zudem entwickelte Ilse Bing, unabhängig von Man Ray, eine Art der Solarisation des künstlerischen Bildes. Ilse Bing wurde 1899 in Frankfurt am Main geboren. 1930 siedelte sie nach Paris über, wo sie bis 1941 blieb, jedoch im Schatten des Zweiten Weltkriegs mit ihrem Mann nach New York emigrierte.

Mit ihren außergewöhnlichen Techniken und der Qualität ihrer Arbeiten zog sie ab Anfang der 1930er Jahre weltweite Aufmerksamkeit auf sich. Vor allem in Europa, den USA, aber auch in Japan genoss sie hohes Ansehen als Fotojournalistin und Modefotografin. 1936 gehörten ihre Arbeiten zu den Exponaten der weltweit ersten Ausstellung zu moderner Fotografie im Pariser Louvre. 1937 reiste Ilse Bing nach New York, wo ihre Bilder in der wegweisenden Ausstellung Photography 1839 - 1937 im Museum of Modern Art aufgenommen wurden. In den 1970er Jahren wurde ihr Werk wiederentdeckt und seither vielfach ausgestellt. Ihre Arbeiten sind in zahlreichen renommierten Sammlungen vertreten, so beispielsweise im Metropolitan Museum of Art und im Museum of Modern Art, New York, sowie im San Francisco Museum of Fine Art und dem Art Institute of Chicago.

Biographie
1899

Ilse Bing wird in Frankfurt am Main, Deutschland, in eine wohlhabende jüdische Familie geboren.

1920

Beginn eines Studiums der Mathematik und Physik an der Universität Frankfurt, anschließend Wechsel zum Studium der Kunstgeschichte

1924

Beginn einer Promotion über den klassizistischen deutschen Architekten Friedrich Gilly (1772 - 1808).

1928

Bings Einstieg in die Fotografie wurde durch das praktische Bedürfnis ausgelöst, ihre Dissertation zu illustrieren. Sie kaufte 1928 eine Voigtlander-Kamera und begann, sich das Fotografieren selbst beizubringen. Im darauffolgenden Jahr kaufte sie eine Leica, die neue und revolutionäre 35-mm-Handkamera, die es den Fotografen ermöglichte, sich schnell bewegende Ereignisse festzuhalten. Bing konnte nicht nur Gebäude für ihre Dissertation fotografieren, sondern verdiente sich mit ihren neu erworbenen Fähigkeiten auch ein Zubrot als Fotojournalistin für die deutsche Illustriertenbeilage Das Illustriete Blatt.

1929 - 1930

Nach ersten kommerziellen Erfolgen mit der Fotografie bricht Bing ihre Dissertation im Sommer 1929 ab und beschließt 1930 nach Paris zu gehen, um sich fortan auf die Fotografie zu fokussieren.

1931

Erste Ausstellung in Paris mit einer Serie von Fotografien von Tänzern des Moulin Rouge. Bing lernt den in New York lebenden Schriftsteller Hendrik Willem van Loon kennen, der zu ihrem wichtigsten Förderer wird.

1932

Der Sammler und Galerist Julien Lévy zeigt Bings Werke in seiner New Yorker Ausstellung Modern European Photography: Twenty Photographers

1937

Rückkehr nach Paris. Heirat des deutschen Pianisten Konrad Wolff.

1940 - 1941

Das jüdische Paar wird gezwungen Paris zu verlassen. Internierung in verschiedenen Lagern in Südfrankreich. Im Juni 1941 Flucht in die USA.

1950er

Bing stellt bis Ende der 1950er Jahre immer wieder in New York aus, arbeitet jedoch immer weniger als Photojournalistin, bevor sie gänzlich mit der Fotografie aufhört.
